K1/2 PHONICS & READING
Duration of Programme: 11 months (December to October the following year)
Duration of Lessons: 4 lessons per month, 1.25 hours per lesson
Programme Synopsis:
This is a highly structured programme conducted by an MOE-trained teacher with a Master Degree in Education from University of Sheffield. All classroom activities and worksheets given will help introduce young learners to the fundamental and essential aspects of the English Language. This programme aims to help young children acquire skills in the area of phonics and reading, so that they are better equipped to face the mainstream curriculum at Primary 1 level. The trainer will incorporate role-playing, story-telling and 'show and tell' into the programme to nurture these children to become confident thinkers and speakers. Children will be given specially structured worksheets to aid in their learning and special instructional tools such as flashcards will be used to facilitate in teaching word recognition. The whiteboard will be used as a medium of instruction to illustrate and highlight concepts. Throughout the class session, children are free to raise questions in a highly interactive learning environment. After each round of teaching, students will be made to demonstrate their understanding through oral assessment and written work. Classroom instructions and assigned work are kept simple to help the young learners overcome their mental barrier and approach the learning of the English language in a fun and positive way.
The following is the breakdown of the 11-month curriculum:
- Months 1-2: Recognition of Letters and Sounds (Aa – Zz)
- Months 3-4: Vowel (short & long) and Consonant Sounds
- Months 4-5: Blending Vowel and Consonant Sounds
- Months 6-7: Adding Consonants to Blends to form Words
- Months 8-9: Reading and Comprehension of simple text
- Months 10-11: Effective Reading & Comprehension
- Months 1-11: (a) Vocabulary building in the context of the areas covered (b) Individual and Group activities (c) Writing exercise to enhance learning of words and pronunciation

Programme Synopsis:
The Reading & Comprehension programme is designed to help pre-schoolers develop a strong foundation in the English language before embarking on formal schooling. This 11-month programme covers simple to complex pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, comprehension and creative writing skills. The trainer will incorporate role-playing, story-telling and 'show and tell' into the programme to nurture these children into becoming confident thinkers and writers. Children will be given our specially printed inhouse materials and special instructional tools will be used to aid in learning comprehension and writing skills. The whiteboard will be used as a medium of instruction to illustrate and highlight concepts. Throughout the class session, children are free to raise questions and brainstorm ideas. After each learning session, students will be made to demonstrate their understanding of the things taught to them.

- Stage 1: Simple to complex pronunciation
- Stage 2: Dictated reading and comprehension
- Stage 3: Writing with simple grammar usage and vocabulary enhancement
- Stage 4: Descriptive writing using instructional tools
- Stage 5: Critical evaluation of individual and peer's writing
